Family in the Flesh vs. Family in the Spirit… Shouldn’t We Desire Both———
In the respect that we hope that all of our family in the flesh would also be those kinsmen in Christ through the Spirit.
Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, and they want to speak to you.”
But He replied to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?”
These questions are put, not as if He was ignorant of who were his mother or his brothers; or as suggesting He had none; or as denying that they were in fact His family. Jesus was not casting any slight on them; or intending to teach people disrespect to parents and family according to the flesh. He was revealing his displeasure with the man or men, for interrupting Him in his work. The intent here is to let them know, that the business of His heavenly Father was preferred by Him more than any His natural relations could have with him. He availed the opportunity of pointing out those who were his family in a spiritual sense.
“And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers!” For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
