Certainly we are human and our minds will sometimes take us to the dark places in our lives where the Lord has shown His Light and granted His grace, mercy and forgiveness. We must not get stuck in those thoughts. Should we wallow in them with despair; we negate the promises of God in our lives.
Should we look back at all on our past failings, we know that we are looking with a right perspective IF we are thanking God for the His power working in our lives today. If we look at how far He has brought us from our past sinful ways with thanksgiving, that is when we know we have truly received His loving promises. If we are using our past transgressions to understand and encourage someone who may be struggling in the place we have been delivered from… then it is beneficial even unto the Glory of God.
Should you find yourself unable to move from the areas of your past that God has already forgiven and forgotten… REMEMBER THE WORD OF GOD:
As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. -Psalm 103:12
Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. -2 Samuel 12:13
I, even I, am He that blots out your transgressions for My own sake, -Isaiah 43:25
Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But He has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. -Hebrews 9:26
FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL TO THEIR INIQUITIES, AND I WILL REMEMBER THEIR SINS NO MORE.” -Hebrews 8:12
